For Healthy Weight Loss, Calories Aren?t the Whole Story

When you hear the word “diet,” it probably evokes a number of images and emotions-most of them unpleasant. Maybe you imagine yourself living on a diet of nothing but salad, or never touching a piece of cake again. For most people, the word “diet” translates to eating fewer calories. But for safe, effective, and healthy weight loss, calories aren’t the whole story.

In fact, if your diet plan is focused solely on a major reduction in your calorie intake, it probably won’t be very successful. You’ll work hard to limit what you eat, but you’ll find that your weight is changing very little, if at all. That’s because when you eat less, the body takes notice, and slows down your metabolism accordingly. The result is that you burn fewer calories, too-and if you’re not using more calories than what you consume, you’re not losing weight.
 
There’s a sure-fire way to make sure that your weight loss efforts will pay off: focus on increasing the rate at which you burn calories before you reduce the rate at which you consume them. The more fuel you burn, the more energy you’ll have, and the more weight you’ll lose.
